Disagreements between the ‘ulama (scholars) of the
eight schools of Islamic jurisprudence are only with respect to the ancillary
branches of religion (furu`) and not as regards
the principles and fundamentals (usul) [of the religion of
Islam]. Disagreement with respect to the ancillary branches of religion (furu`) is a mercy. Long ago
it was said that variance in opinion among the ‘ulama (scholars) “is a good
affair”.
I kind of
figured Islam had its ancillary branches, every faith has its ancillaries,
space where there can be differences of opinion in ‘the grey areas’.
Islam’s seed of controversy
For example, in the Sunan Ibn Majah, one of the six major Hadith
collections,[31] it states in a hasan (good)[9] narration that every male admitted
into Paradise will be given eternal erections and wed to 72 wives, all with
libidinous sex organs.[10] Similarly in another hadith with
multiple narrators that has been graded hasan (good), it states that the martyr
(shahid) will be married to seventy-two of
al-hoor al-‘iyn.[32][33]
Once I tried
a half Viagra and never again. My date
left and I couldn’t leave my flat for six hours. It was a nightmare. Here’s another more serious issue here, the
hadith has to promise martyrs with sex?
To be absent in the body is to be present in the Lord. Do I want an eternal erection? And 72 virgins? Well they won’t be virgins for very long with
an eternal erection, believe me.
72 skiddoo
The section many people claim promises this is Chapter (78)
sūrat l-naba (The Great News). The controversy is due to the poor translation
of ONE verse from verses 29 to 34.
So taste you (the results of
your evil actions); No increase shall We give you, except in torment. (30) Verily,
for the Muttaqûn[], there will be a success (Paradise); (31) Gardens and
vineyards, (32) And young full-breasted (mature) maidens of equal age, (33) And
a full cup (of wine). (34)

And what about
female martyrs? Are they promised 72
male virgins? I don’t think so. The Koran is very pro male with lots of
promised coitus for the martyr but what woman in their right mind would choose
to be a martyr unless she was a lesbian and then it makes sense.
So there’s no
mention of 72 virgins in this interpretation but the state of the martyr is unequivocal.
I read enough of
this to completely disagree. A smart writer
but one who isn’t in touch with the spirit of the times. There is no place in the 21st
century for martyrs. References to the
Koran are footnoted, a historical aberration for what was then is not now.
So where to go
from here? It’s almost time for
bed. Today I finished the wash, swept
and spot cleaned the floors, produced more final exam exercises and! read half of my first book of the year and
with the longest title, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and his years of pilgrimage
by Haruki Murakami. I wish I started my
teaching career in Japan, surely I’d still be there.
Tomorrow the plan
is mass at 8am, then a McDonalds breakfast and then to the office. The students are eager to finish and may not
show up but that will be a bad deal for the ones on the bubble between pass and
fail and half of my class is on the bubble.
And these bubble students, I don’t know what it is but they know passing
is going to be difficult and there they go avoiding class, perhaps following
the better students, emulating without a clue.
